Broward educator named Florida Principal of the Year
A Broward principal was named Florida Principal of the Year.

James Griffin has come a long way since his days as a rebellious teenager who often ended up in the principal's office. On Friday, Griffin was named this year's Florida Principal of the Year.``It's surreal,'' said Griffin, shortly after he received the award from the state's Department of Education. ``I'm so overwhelmed.'' Griffin is currently the principal at Lauderdale Lakes Middle, but has also been at the helm of Rock Island Elementary. Having a state principal of the year is ``just an example of the great leadership Broward has,'' said Superintendent Jim Notter. ``This is a really big deal for Broward,'' he said. ``We have the top administrator in the state working for us.'' When word spread about Griffin's win, students at Rock Island Elementary began cheering, screaming and hugging, said reading coach Dana Rhodes-Hurley. ``Everyone was so happy for him,'' she said. ``We can't wait to see him and congratulate him.'' `PHENOMENAL' Griffin, who became a principal in 2007, is credited with bringing technology and encouraging community involvement at Rock Island Elementary, a Title 1 school. ``James Griffin, hands-down, deserves this award,'' said Desmond Blackburn, the Central Area Superintendent. ``He is a phenomenal leader and is a great representative for Broward County.'' This isn't the first time a South Florida principal was named the state's best. Miami-Dade's Douglas Rodriguez, the former head of Ronald Reagan and Miami Central high schools, was Florida's 2008 Principal of the Year.REBELLIOUS YOUTH Griffin, who grew up in Broward County, attended Westwood Heights Elementary School, Riverland Elementary School, New River Middle School and Dillard High School.And it's true, he spent a lot of time in the principal's office -- and not for the right reasons. A self-proclaimed underachiever, Griffin often spent his days getting yelled at.NUDGE FROM MOTHER But a push from his aunt and mother sent him to college, where he decided to become a teacher. Soon others pushed him into becoming an administrator, a role he takes very seriously. ``It's a lot of responsibility,'' he said. When he was named a finalist in November, Griffin said he couldn't have been prouder. But winning feels like ``a dream.''
